Fifty Word Fantasy Entries

This post contains all of my Fifty Word Fantasy entries from over on r/fantasywriters. Every week, a post is made with a single word prompt, and you are tasked with responding with a fantasy vignette relating to that single word prompt in fifty words or less. It's a lot of fun, I would recommend it!

Guilt

What was it worth, doing that to an innocent human? Seeing his fear as I squeezed around him, just to prove myself? I turned his fear to submission, against his will, for the sake of becoming an adult.

Aren’t we supposed to relish in the power we wield? I couldn’t.

Forgive

The oozeling rushed to her master, who had just fallen from the shadow. As she tended to the wounds on his chest, he spoke.

“I’m… sorry. That I freed her. We were happy together, but I was greedy.”

The oozeling smiled, covering his wounds. “You love her, don’t you, Master?”

Weird

“Darling, could you come in here?”

Looking up from the center table, Draven stood and replied, making his way to the other room. “What's wrong, Lilah…”

He froze. His wife was covered in scales, her skin a pale greenish blue.

“That potion seller? His medicine seems to have… side effects.”

Clothes

Raven’s coughing was drowned out by the roar of sickly green snow, her sweatshirt soaked.

Audrey saw her friend, and looked at the sky. She sighed and removed her fur coat, placing it over Raven’s shoulders. Raven opened her eyes, frozen, until a tearful smile overtook her.

“I love you.”

Sleep

Audrey felt her blood freeze and boil at the same time, the snow pouring onto her bare arms. Slowly, darkness encroached upon her vision. She was close to death, yet as Raven slept on her lap, Audrey's thick fur coat protecting her, she knew she'd chosen correctly.

“Stay alive, Raven.”

Unseen

Darkness, lingering over the child. Her arm, still holding out a lantern, as though it hadn’t gone out. The cracking stone wall, vines slowly crawling across it, a soft, rubbery scratching. The air completely still, cold against her skin.

Something approaching her from behind, to which she paid no mind.

Truth

Alura was a siren. I knew I shouldn’t feel the way I did. As soon as I told her, my fate would be sealed, and I’d be… trapped. But she sat there, under the warmth of the sun, shining like an angel. So I told her.

And warmly she smiled.

Spare

The Blood King stood, cold, judging eyes locked onto the traitorous mage. Iceblade glistened along with his armor as it pressed into the neck.

“The kingdom wants you dead,” warned the Blood King. The mage cowered.

“That said…”

Bag

Hanging from the man’s wrinkled hands by a fraying thread was a cloth sack, no bigger than a water glass. “Go on, then,” he croaked.

She pulled it toward herself, hesitant to take it. The bag radiated heat. She felt as though her skin was melting. “Don’t be afraid.”

Impossible

He had assumed the seller was just telling a story. It was just an item with an urban legend.

Yet, the man at the typewriter stared, astounded, at the being before him. His eyes darted between the page and the creature, checking the description word for word.

No stories here.
